Portion Sizes
Below are approximate serving numbers for finger portions and larger slices. Finger portions have been served traditionally as a toast to the bride and groom and may be suitable when a dessert is being served with the wedding breakfast.
Finger portions are sized at 1” x 1” x 3” (depth of cake). Larger slices of cake could be served as a dessert, perhaps with an accompaniment such as fresh cream, fruit coulis or crème fraiche. If serving slices as dessert bear in mind that you will need to do the traditional cake cutting before sitting down to eat to give your caterers enough time to cut the cake. Slices are sized at 1” x 2” x 3”

Wedding Cake Size

Many brides and Grooms are now opting for smaller, more intimate celebrations with fewer than 100 guests.
If you were to serve finger portions for this number you would require a 10” square cake or an 11” round cake.
Depending on the design you have in mind this may not provide much scope for designing your perfect wedding cake.
This is where dummy tiers can be used to amazing effect.
They are polystyrene tiers which are decorated the same way as edible tiers and then discarded when the cake is served.
Many of the pictures in the gallery show cakes which incorporate dummies and you cannot tell where they are.
By using dummies it is possible to create a visually stunning cake without wastage
It is also possible to include a cutting cake. This is an extra cake which is not part of the main cake and is decorated with plain white (or main cake colour) fondant icing. It is then served along with the wedding cake.
This option can be used when there are a large number of guest to cater for but your chosen design does not require lots of tiers.
