Volcano Birthday Cake
This birthday cake was made for a 6th birthday party. The recipient was mad about dinosaurs so I decided to make a volcano cake with dinosaurs around the bottom of it.
I made the shape of the cake by cutting up the sponge into rough sections and sticking them on top of each other with butter cream until I had a shape I was happy with. Once I had the shape I covered the cake with brown fondant.
When I am making children’s cakes I give my client the choice between a layer of marzipan and a layer of fondant because not many children like marzipan.
I then covered the cake half way up with green fondant to look like the grassy bit at the base of the mountain.
I created some texture on the grass by pressing a aponge into the fondant while it was still soft. The lava was made by cutting a paint splodge shape from rolled fondant. I used fondant with various tools to create the rocks, bushes, trees and grass.
The pools were made by first making lots of rocks to create a fence around the pool area. I then cut the shape of the bottom of the pool from rolled blue fondant. Next I filled the pool with clear piping gel to give the effect of water.
The kids just managed to get through “happy birthday to you” before demolishing the cake.

Well, the Dinosaur cake was THE main event at my Son’s 6th birthday party. He was absolutely bowled over by it and so were all his little friends. To the adults, it seemed a shame to demolish such a work of art, but the kid’s had no such qualms!! And, even better, it tasted as good as it looked! Thanks to Amanda, who really took a vague ‘Dinosaur’ theme from me and turned it into Jurassic Volcano Land, complete with Dinosaurs. Amanda was professional and helpful throughout and took the greatest care to ensure this difficult ’structure’ was delivered on time and intact. I would recommend her work highly.
