Shoe Wedding Cake

Shoe Wedding Cake

This is one of the cakes I made for Wedding TVs The Great Cake Bake.

The bride to be for this one was a woman with a passion for shoes. She told us on the reveal show that she had so many pairs she was not entirely sure where they all were! There have been times in my life when I have had many pairs of shoes but I have always been able to locate them in the one wardrobe.

Shoe Wedding Cake

This lady was British born with Asian roots and wanted to reflect this in her wedding cake. She had decided on a purple dress.

She wanted to include her passion for shoes in the cake.

Although she wanted to include her Asian roots in some way she did not want this to dominate the shoe/fashion theme.

This is the design I came up with for this bride to be. The cake is a 3 tiered cake but also includes a substantial base, a separator and a shoe on top. These extra features add height and give it that extra wow factor.

I decided on white as the overall colour because I felt it would be a good base for bold colours and patterns on the cake.

The bottom tier is a square shoe box which has little silver dots piped onto the lid of the box.

I chose silver because it works so well with the vibrant pink and purple within the cake.

As the bride to be had told us about her thing for shoes I wanted to get a look that resembled shoes in a display case of some sort.

I decided on a perspex box. This works well because it is a perfect display case but also works as a separator between tiers.

I knew I wanted to have some shoes featured but was not sure how I would do them. I wanted them to be in sugar paste but was concerned that if they were life size as I wanted them to be the sugar paste would potentially crack and break.

So I decided on paper mache covered with sugar paste. Now it did occur to me that this would not make for a totally edible shoe. However it is my experience that many brides want to keep a part of their cake such as a topper. The shoes made this way would be perfect for this and someone who loves shoes would very likely want to keep them.

The first thing I did was to buy some shoes that were close in design to the ones I had identified on good old Google. I have to tell you at this point that this was a great sacrifice on my part as I amĀ  size 7 and had I bought that size they would have been enormous by the time they were covered with paper and sugar paste.

I had to buy size 3 shoes which I completely ruined by covering with glue which meant that I couldn’t event take them back and get my size. Right that’s my little whinge over with.

I had to make the shoes in sections, allowing bits to dry before adding more. The shoe in the perspex case was a platform shoe with a bow on it.

The shoe sitting on the top of the cake was a little more delicate with a peep toe and silver sole insert.

I am really pleased with how they turned out.

The tier above the perspex separator is another shoe box. this lid is decorated with different sized piped purple beads.

The tier on top of this is a round tier. I wanted a little variety and the round tier ties in with the round base of the cake. This tier features a stencil design where the cake is covered with pink sugar paste. This is then overlaid with white sugar paste and shapes cut from the overlaid paste to create the effect shown.

You can read about how I did this in the comments section of the beaded wedding cake post

Shoe Wedding Cake

I looked at lots of Asian patterns ans wedding themes when deciding on a design for this tier. Eventually I decided on something simple as the bride has said that she did not want to over power the shoe theme. The pattern around the side of this tier includes silverĀ  sugar paste tear drops, pink hearts and stars and piped beads.

The base of the cake features the same effect but with purple as the main colour.

The pink shoe sits on top of the cake.

I think this is one of my favourite cakes. I love the colours and the proportions of it.
