Pond Birthday Cake

This cake was made for a birthday celebration - the greeting is a giveaway.
My client wanted to include elements of the recepients garden as he enjoyed spending time in it.
Before starting the cake itself I made lots of pots containing shrubs and flowers. The pots are made from shaped sugarpaste.

To make flower pots I put a small dome of brown sugarpaste on top of the pot and then attached little blossoms to it.
Because the flowers are on top of the dome it looks like they are growing up out of the pots.
To make the shrubs I made lots of cone shapes in various shades of green.
I then used different tools to create the texture on them.
Next I created the hole for the pond by covering the top of the cake with a layer of marzipan and then overlaid that with a thick layer of marzipan.
I then cut out a square from the thick layer to create the pond.
The next thing was the patio which covers the rest of the cake. The texture of the patio was made using an embosser pressed into the sugarpaste.

I made a chair using modelling paste which sets hard so is perfect for structures that need to fine but strong.
The man in the chair is the recipient of the cake and my client asked me to make a little dog like his dog.
She sent photos of John and his dog so that I could make models that resembled them.
I filled the pond with piping gel which I had coloured blue. I also put some orange sugarpaste fish in the pond.

On each corner of the side of the cake I made a hanging basket. I made these by rolling out balls of sugarpaste.
I cut these balls in half and then cut a quarter out of the half. This could then be attached to the corner of the cake.
Then I made the hanging part using little sugarpaste ropes.
These ropes didn’t need to support any weight.
The basket itself was attached to the corner with edible glue and light enough to stick without any other support.
I made flower beds around the sides of the cake and made some patio areas in each corner of the the board.

The birthday boy has a bottle of beer in his hand (as it should be on his birthday) and I love the way the dog is lying.
The photo my client provided showed him lying this way.
I think this is a lovely scene of a man enjoying his garden and a beer! with his much loved pooch beside him.

Wow! I just had to leave a comment as i’ve so enjoyed reading through your site for the last hour and your cakes have totally blown me away! Your ideas and attention to detail are truly amazing! I’ve recently started my own cake business and have a 3D ‘Cat in the Hat’ cake to deliver on saturday that is currently giving me sleepless nights, but after seeing some of your work i do think its going to work after all! (either that or i’ll be in a padded cell by monday :-))
Big thanks

I have 4 cakes to make by next week, and one of them is a cake for a lady who loves her garden, so seeing your pond cake has really helped me with my design. Can I just ask, do you ever use sugarpaste for the decoration, as when I have used it, it tends to crack when it dries so you can’t do it too far in advance. I use modelling paste for flowers and people, but just wondered what you did? Thanks for showing your beautiful cakes.
