Polka Dot Birthday Cake

This cake was made for a 21st birthday celebration. My client was having a big birthday party and her colour scheme was pink and orange.
These are both strong, vibrant colours which work very well together.
The cake itself was vanilla sponge with butter cream filling. I covered the cake with marzipan and bright pink fondant icing.

The next thing was to make the big numbers. These were cut from thickly rolled orange fondant. I cut the numbers free hand and then rounded and smoothed the edges. I then attached them to the top of the cake using a small amount of water on a brush.
When attaching decorations with brushed on water it is important not to add too much as excess water on the fondant will create a shiny mark which cannot be removed and may create a small indent in the fondant.
Once the numbers were in place I cut small circles from rolled orange fondant and stuck them all over the cake.

The next thing is did was to make a ribbon using orange fondant. I used my very handy ribbon making tool for this (see ribbon and jewel wedding cake.)
Having attached the ribbon around the base of the cake I made a bow for the front of the cake.
I have since heard from my client who was very pleased with her birthday cake.
