Pink Handbag Birthday Cake

Pink Handbag Birthday cake

This cake was made for a girl’s 7th birthday party.

It was a vanilla sponge cake with vanilla butter cream filling. I missed out the marzipan on this one and substituted it with a layer of fondant icing.

There was not too much shaping to do with this cake because the shape of the bag was almost rectangular.

The first thing I did was to make the handle so that it would have time to set. I added gum tragacanth (see jewel wedding cake) to pink fondant and rolled out a handle shaped section.

I ran the serrated roller toll along each edge of the handle and then draped it over the side of a 6 inch round polystyrene dummy to set.

Once the bag was covered with a layer of white fondant icing I added the pink fondant icing. I did not cover the cake with one large piece of fondant because there were different shades of pink on it.

I attached a section of pink fondant to the front of the cake and then used a diamond shaped embosser to create the shapes. I than ran a serrated roller tool over the line to look like stitching.

I created the same effect on the back of the cake. I then added strips of darker pink fondant to the sides of the bag and attached some different sized flowers.

The next thing I did was the flap of the bag. I cut out a semi circle in light pink fondant and attached it to the top of bag so that it was draping over the front. I edged it with strips of darker fondant with stitching effects.

I made the clasp using cut out flowers in various shades of pink.

The birthday greeting on the cake board was created using letter cutters. There are lots of different style letter cutters and they can be used as an alternative to piping. On this occasion I felt that the style of these letters was perfect for a little girls cake.

I added little flowers brushed with lustre dust.

The last thing before delivery was to add the handle. I attached it by brushing a small amount of water along each end and placing it on the top of the bag.

I then secured it further by adding ropes of fondant icing around each handle.

I also added a tag as some designer bags have on them. This was a heart with the number 7 on it made up of tiny flowers. I attached it to the handle with a rope of fondant.

I really enjoyed making this cake. Its good fun to make such a pink, pretty cake.
