Louis Vuitton Bag Cake

I really enjoyed making this cake.
It consisted of two tiers. The bottom tier was a rectangle and provided the base for the bag itself.
I began the bag by making some embossers for the various patterns. I made them using foam which I cut to the right shape. I stuck the cut foam on some card and put a little square of foam on the other side to hold.

The next thing I had to do was make the buckles and metal parts of the bag.
I used sugarpaste with gum tragacanth added to assist the hardening process.
I dusted these bits with creamy gold lustre dust.
I sprayed them with edible glaze and left them to harden.
The bottom tier has plain embossed Louis Viutton logos all over it.
Once I had got the right shape for the bag, filled it and covered it with marzipan I could begin the decoration bit which is always my favourite bit to do.

I covered the back and front of the bag with white sugarpaste and then used my embossers with no colour on them to emboss the patterns all over.
I did not cover all four sides together because the embossing takes time.
If I was to cover all sides and then emboss the sugarpaste would start to firm up and by the time I got to the last two sides and would crack as I pushed the embosser into it.
I embossed the patterns with no colour to start with so that I could get them placed right before adding colour.
I used paste colours mixed with painting solution for the patterns.

I added a raised section for the pocket and embossed this. The next thing I did was make the zip. This was made using a long strip of sugarpaste. Once I had put it in place I used a modified cutter to make little indents to create a zip effect.

I also made the little bit that opens and closes the zip - does anyone know what that little thing is called? probably some word like ginglyform (which actually means hinged shaped).
Having made the zip I added all the metal clasps to the bag.
Once these were done I made the handles for the bag.
I made them by rolling out thick strings to the right length. Next I rolled out some strips of sugarpaste to cover the strings with.
I did it this way because the handles have seams on them and this was the best way to achieve this.
Once the handles were in place I painted the edges of the seams with dark brown paste colour to achieve the same look as the handles on the real bag.
And that was it! all done. The birthday girl was very happy with her cake.

Amanda,
What can I say……. That cake was AMAZING!
I knew you were good, but that was unreal. It was the conversation piece of the day and Philippa was so chuffed with it. Not only that but it was blooming yummy too.
Everyone was asking about you on the day, so I’ve been handing out your website address.
Next time I have a need for a cake, I’ll be in touch.
Thanks again.

May I ask how you made your embossers. What sort of sponge did you use? Your cake is fabulous, I tried making an LV bag cake, but the results were definitely not as amazing!
Thanks

Your LV bag cake is fantastic. I have made a few handbag cakes but have never embossed a pattern onto the sugarpaste, and have a bag exactly like this to make next week. Please could you explain how the foam cut out works, as it doesn\’t seem heavy enough to leave an imprint. Many thanks in advance of a reply.
