Statue of Liberty Birthday Cake

Liberty Birthday Cake

This cake was made for a 40th birthday celebration.

My client told me that she had organised a surprise trip to New York for herself and her husband for his 40th birthday.

She was planning to present the cake and then tell her husband about the trip.

This was an interesting cake to make. I needed to find a few images of the Statue of Liberty to get a good copy for the top of the cake.

I made the statue first with this cake. I started by cutting out a piece of cake card in the shape of the main part of the statue. Next I attached a raised lump of sugarpaste as a base for the statue.

Getting the colour right took a while. It was a mix of pale blue, mint green, grey and white. That combination made the weathered green colour of the statue.

I had to build up the robes of the statue bit by bit.

My client did not want a 3D statue but wanted to have it rising out of the cake with texture and details.

Once the statue was finished I could put it to one side while I made the cake.

The cake was a vanilla sponge cake with vanilla butter cream and strawberry jam.

The cake is decorated to look like the base of the statue with brick details.

I inserted two vertical plastic dowels into the cake which the statue could sit on.

The statue was not actually a very heavy structure but I wanted to be sure that, once on the cake the statue would not sink into the paving detail on the top of the cake.

I made a section in the same colour as the statue (probably a correct architechtural term forn this) for the number 40 to sit on.

The number 40 was decorated with stars and stripes to fit in with the American theme.

My client wanted the greeting “Welcome to the Big Apple” on the cake board.

The Big Apple part is on the apple itself.

My client told me that her husband enjoyed his celebration and his cake.
