Ivory & Purple Wedding Cake

This cake was a magnificent cake which stood very tall.
It was a four tiered square wedding cake with separators which added to the height of the cake.
The cake tiers were first covered with purple sugarpaste which I then airbrushed with edible ink to achieve a rich, dark shade of purple.

The tiers were then overlaid with ivory embossed roses. I used this effect in a slightly different way on the Rose Lace Wedding Cake. I dusted these with ivory lustre dust to give them a subtle sheen.
The separators were covered with ivory ribbon with a narrow purple ribbon around the middle of each.

The ribbons were finished with simple bows in the centre which descended in size to fit the size of the separator.
Once assembled this cake was very tall and because the separators were smaller than the tiers above I decided to insert a central vertical dowel to add extra support.
The central dowel is tightly fitted into the base board of the cake which is constructed using several cake drums fitted together.
Once fitted together I can then drill a central hole which is the same diameter as the dowel.
Because of the way the base is constructed the result is a depth of approximately two inches for the dowel to fit tightly into.
Each separator and tier has a central hole made to accomodate the vertical dowel. The cake tiers have hollow food grade dowels inserted first to protect the cake from the central dowel.

Once the dowel is cut to the correct length the separators and tiers are ‘threaded’ onto it when I assemble the cake.
The venue was Spains Hall and the cake table was back lit providing a lovely setting for the cake
I love the height of this cake and the lutrous finish of the roses.
