Gucci Handbag Birthday Cake

Gucci Bag Birthday Cake

This cake was made for a birthday celebration for a lady who lunches and loves designer handbags. It is a copy of Gucci’s Jackie O bag.

I began by cutting the sponge cake to the right shape. In this case it was not far off a square cake. I then filled it with delicious vanilla butter cream and covered it with marzipan. Once that had dried out and firmed up I covered the marzipan with pale brown fondant.

I added gum tragacanth to a little fondant to use for the handle of the bag and the buckles(see Ribbon and Floral Wedding Cake).

I rolled out this fondant and then cut out all the buckles and the other metal parts of the bag and left them to set. Once they had hardened I painted them with edible silver paint.

I rolled out a strip of fondant for the handle of the bag. I created a stitching effect by running a serrated roller tool along each edge of the handle. I threaded the handle through the buckle and then draped the handle over scrunched up kitchen roll to give it shape.

I attached a strip of green and red fondant down the front of the bag and created a stitching effect on them. I used a scribing tool to create the logo on the small metal plate and painted it with edible silver paint.

I glued the metal plate and buckles together with edible glue and threaded pale brown strips of fondant through them which were then attached to the bag.

Once the handle had hardened I attached it to the bag with rolled out sections of fondant to look like parts of the bag with a stitching effect.

The cake went down very well at the lady’s birthday lunch.
