Gucci Birthday Cake

Gucci Birthday Cake

For this order I made two Gucci Pelham shoulder bag cakes.

My client wanted two cakes because he had planned two separate celebrations for his wife’s birthday.

The cakes are copies of the Pelham shoulder bag below which my client had bought as a birthday present.

Gucci Pelham Shoulder Bag

I told my husband about this order, the Gucci bag, TWO parties and TWO fab birthday cakes but I am not sure if it registered.

They are both fruit cakes which is good for cakes like these which need to be shaped and then have a lot of decoration detail on them.

I wanted the bags to stand up so I included a vertical supporting pole through the centre of the cake.

The pole was fitted very securely into the base boards of the cake.

Once I had covered the shaped cake with marzipan I could then lower it onto the pole and secure the base of the cake onto the board.

Because fruit cake is so compact and dense it would hold the pole in place.

I created this support because the cake was a tall thin structure and I wanted to make sure it would not topple.

Before beginning the decoration on the bag I made all the buckles and clasps.

These were made with modelling paste. Modelling paste is very pliable and sets very hard.

I began the decoration by covering the whole of the cake with light brown sugarpaste. At the top of the bag the sugarpaste sits just above the edge of the marzipan.

I then made a large pocket at the front of the bag and covered it with the same colour sugarpaste.

I made sections of paste on the bag which had a slightly different texture. There are also some piping details on the bag which I made by using my handy clay gun with an attachment which would give me a thin rope of sugarpaste.

The next thing to do was to create the flap on the top of the cake and the buckle.

These parts of the bag were also textured.

Once I had added the flap on the top I made the edges slightly upturned to create a more realistic effect.

I also added stitching detail to the cake for a more realistic finish.

The next thing I did was to make the top handle on the bag.

I used modelling paste for this and draped it over a polystyrene semi circle while it was hardening.

Once this was in place I made the long handle which drapes down the back of the bag. I textured this handle and added stitching detail.

I had to deliver these cakes to Leeds and must admit that this was a little daunting due to the shape of the cake and the top handle.

I left the polystyrene support in place whilst transporting the cakes and did not go around any roundabouts on two wheels - not that I drive this way with no cakes in the car!

Although I had to transport these cakes over a long distance, 200 miles on the motorway is easier than a 10 mile trip on craggy old country roads.

I was really pleased with the authenticity of these cakes.

My wife loved the cakes and they were widely admired - the attention to detail was amazing. A couple of the guys thought at first passing they were real handbags but that’s blokes for you and their other halves are more pessimistic about their birthday prospects
