Gizmo Birthday Cake

Gizmo Birthday Cake

Anyone who watched the Gremlin films will know who (or what) Gizmo is.

My client wanted a cake with Gizmo on it for his wife’s 40th birthday. I wouldn’t usually expect to be making a cake with a gremlin on it for a 40 year old woman.

Having said that most kids would look at you blankly if you started talking about Gizmo and Gremlins and no food after midnight.

Having said that most kids would look at you blankly when you talk.

I was really pleased with Gizmo. He actually looked cuddly even though he was completely made using fondant icing.

Gizmo Birthday Cake

I began this cake with the cake itself which was chocolate filled with chocolate butter cream and covered with chocolate marzipan and pale blue fondant icing.

The next thing to do was to make a teddy shaped object with white fondant icing.

I cut out the eyes, again from brown and black fondant.

Once I had a shape I was happy with I could begin applying his fur. I did this with a very handy little tool I have.

It is a clay gun with a tubular section where the fondant is placed. It has a lever at one end which is attached to a spring and pushes the fondant through the tube under pressure.

The other end of the tube can be fitted with different shaped discs to get different effects. I used a disc with lots of little holes in it.

This gave me lots of strings of fondant. I had to cut the strings as they came through and then attach little sections at a time until Gizmo was covered in fur.

This was a very time consuming process as I could only attach small sections of fur at a time and they had to be placed close together so each section of strings did not cover a very big area.

Once Gizmo was done I placed him onto a small round piece of round card covered with white fondant icing.

I inserted a dowel into the centre of the cake to sit under the card that Gizmo was sitting on. By the time he had all his fur on he was quite heavy and I did not want him to sink into the cake.

Once he was in place on top of the cake I cut the letters and numbers from rolled out white fondant which looked great against the pale blue background of the cake.

I remember in the films that little Gizmo always had a slightly worried, vulnerable look and he looks that way on this cake which is great.

HI AMANDA
YOU ARE SO CREATIVE ,, I LOVE YOUR WORK
I\’M A BIG FAN OF FONDANT ALSO ..
THAT\’S WHY I HAVE SOME QUES. I\’LL BE DELIGHTED IF YOU ANSWERED..

WHEN I MAKE FONDANT .. IT MELTS EASILY .. AS SOON AS I BRING THE CAKE OUT OF THE FRIDGE .. IT WILL START MELTING…WITH A GLAZE .. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS WRONG ? CAN I ADD SOME THING TO MAKE IT HARDER AND LAST LONGER ?

Amanda

Hi thanks so much for the compliment.

I think my post may be misleading, I do not mean glace icing made by adding water to icing sugar to crete a thick pouring icing. The icing I use for cakes is the icing/sugarpaste that you roll out and lay over the cake. I do not cover cakes with glace icing. Icing that you roll out should not be refridgerated.

As soon as you take it out and it begins to come up to room temp condensation will appear on the surface. This will create a shiny surface which you cannot do anything about.

I am not sure about the melting thing you refer to. I have never refridgerated cakes other thatn ones covered with butter cream.

Once a cake has been covered with marzipan and rolled fondant it will be airtight and should keep pretty well so you should not need to put it in the firdge.

I hope this helps.

OH THANX ALOT
YEAH MAYBE BECAUSE AFTER I COVER IT WITH THE FONDANT, I PUT IT BACK INSIDE THE FRIDGE
SO IT’S MY BAD :p

KEEP ON THE GOOD WORK
I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST
