Frog Wedding Cake

Frog Wedding Cake

This froggy wedding cake was real fun to make.

It consisted of three tiers with a stream running around the base of each one.

The first job I did was to make the lily pads and lillies that would sit on top of the stream. The lily pads were simple to make, they were rolled out green sugarpaste cut into circles.

I cut a little pie (or cheese depending what you call it in Triv P) shaped wedge out and scored the top of the pad.

The lilles were made using a daisy cutter.

I then used a tool to shape the petals and used a chocolate box to act as formers for the flowers.

My son got me a box of Toffifee (anyone my age will be familiar with these) from a mothers day sale at school.

I would never have got them for myself but actually they were scrummy and the cup shapes in the box are brilliant for forming flowers.

Next were the frogs. My client wanted a bride and groom frog and wanted the bride to have black hair.

I also made two rounded hearts which were attached to a strong wire.

This could be inserted into a plastic tube inside the cake to make sure the hearts stayed in place behind the frog bride and groom.

I covered the cakes with marzipan and pale green sugarpaste.

I then assembled the tiers ready for the streams.

I had to create a channel for the ‘water’ to run through. The frist thing to do was to create the blue colour for the stream.

I could have done this by colouring clear piping gel and then adding it but I decided to roll out some blue sugarpaste and then attach it to the cake board, the top of the bottom tier and the top of the second tier.

I created the channel by running a rope of darker green sugarpaste along the edge of the blue sugarpaste.

I then had to make some little stumps of sugarpaste for the lily pads and lillies to sit on.

This is because although the pads and lillies would be pretty light they may sink into the piping gel and would most likely become very soft if they sat directly on top of the gel.

Once I had done this I could start the job of piping the gel into the channels.

As you can imagine this took quite a lot of gel.

When I delivered the cake I let the oganisers know that it would be best not to serve up big lumps of it as it would be like eating toothpaste.

Once the piping gel was in place I attached the pads and lillies to the stumps in the streams.

I love the colours on this cake. They are all pastel shades or fairly simple colours and they look really fresh together.

A great design as usual - the piping gel looks so effective. I remember Toffiffee but didn’t know you could still get it, what a great excuse to go and buy a box!
