Football Boots Birthday Cake

This cake was made for a 30th birthday celebration. It was a vanilla sponge cake with vanilla butter cream.
My client sent me a picture to work from.

First I had to shape the cake to resemble 2 separate football boots. Once I had done this I filled the two cakes with butter cream and covered them with marzipan.
Once the marzipan had set a little I began to cover it with black and red fondant. The boot that sat on the grass was supported with lumps of fondant underneath. I could then slide the studs into place without them being squashed.
They would not be strong enough to take the weight of the boot with no other support.

The boot resting on top needed some extra support. If I had just leaned it on the other boot there is a good chance it would have sunk in the middle. Before covering the sole of this boot with fondant a cut a thin cake card to the correct shape and placed it between the marzipan layer and fondant layer.

Once covered with black and red fondant I rested one boot on top of the other. Once in place I attached the studs to the bottom of the resting boot.
I finished the boots by giving them a light coating of confectioners glaze.
I covered the board with green fondant which I then cut roughly to look like grass. I cut a strip of green fondant and created a white line marking with a sponge dipped in edible white paint.
I cut the letters from rolled red fondant and stuck them to the white line.
