Cube Birthday Cake

This square cake was made for a 33rd birthday celebration.
As I often find when making cakes I learned something new. My client for this cake was German and she told me that in Germany they have special celebrations for 22nd, 33rd, 44th (and so on) birthdays.

She wanted a cake that reflected her nationality, her age and the fact that she has been living in the UK for five years.
I felt a cube with the different themes on each side would work well.
This cake has the German flag on one side, the Union Jack on one side, the number five on one side and the number thirty three on the other side. On the top is a birthday greeting.

I had to make sure that the flags were right on this cake.
I made sure that the German flag was the right way up.
Sounds like an easy thing to do but when I am engrossed in what I’m doing it could end up the wrong way with me then having to take it all off and start again - with a few expletives no doubt.
I finished the edges of the cubes with edible gold ribbons.
These were made with fondant brushed with edible gold lustre.

The Union Jack is quite tricky. I remember doing it at school and thinking “why didn’t they just make it symmetrical” It has thick bits and thin bits in certain places.
When my husband saw it he commented that some stripes were thicker than others - he obviously did not pay attention in class.
My client was very happy with her cake and her friends wanted to know if they could get a cake delivered to Germany!
