Castle Wedding Cake

Castle Wedding Cake

This cake was made for a client who was having a Scottish theme for her wedding. She wanted a castle but not a twee one. She wanted it to have a realistic feel but still have some romance.

Castle Wedding Cake

The castle is a combination of edible and dummy tiers. My client did not need such a large cake but wanted a tall, stunning cake which would stand out.

I used an embosser with a brick effect to create the walls, but only after I had spent around three hours colouring the sugarpaste.

Considering it needed to be a kind of mucky brown/grey colour you would think that would be pretty easy to achieve.

Especially remembering that mixing every colour of plasticine or paint always reached this shade.

Maybe that’s where I went wrong - I should have taken a bit of every colour I had and put it all together.

Anyway back to the point. I assembled the dummy tiers before applying and embossing the sugarpaste.

I made all the sets of steps by cutting out a chunky rectangle of sugarpaste and then cutting out the steps.

I attached them to the sides of the castle with edible glue.

When all of the sugarpaste had hardened I could start the job of shading the walls to give them more authenticity and to age them.

I used a mix of black, grey and a couple of shades of green dust to achieve this.

I mixed some black, dark green and grey to dust between all the bricks.

Once this was done I used a harder flat ended brush to make lighter green streaks down the brickwork.

When all the shading was done I added green piped stems and leavescreeping along the brickwork and then added dinky flowers in pale and dark purple.

The bride and groom were made using modelling paste.

I really love the way the brides dress drapes over the steps.

The overall look of the castle was old and craggy and realistic although the little flowers and bride and groom add a romantic touch to it.
