Bowser Birthday Cake

This cake was made for a 5th birthday party. The birthday cake itself was vanilla sponge cake with vanilla butter cream filling. The usual layer of marzipan was omitted and replaced with a layer of fondant icing.
I began by making the Bowser figure who, for anyone who does not have a five year old boy is a character in the Mario series of computer games.

This was challenging. When making a figure I would normally insert cocktail sticks between limbs for added support and to hold the figure together. For a childs birthday cake I would not want to insert anything that might cause injury, considering that 5 year old children love big lumps of anything sweet.

made bowser using coloured fondant with gum tragacanth added. Gum tragacanth is a powder which, when added to fondant enables it to harden more than fondant alone would. I made the limbs separately and then once then had hardened sufficiently I used edible glue to attach the limbs to the body.

I wanted to make sure that Bowser didn’t end up looking cross eyed and goofy instead of the fierce creature he is supposed to be. Luckily for me my son was on hand to point out any short comings and was more than happy to give me endless instruction on how it should be done.
The cake was constructed with two shallow tiers stacked on top of one another to look like birthday presents. Once the bottom tier was covered and placed on the cake board I inserted plastic dowels to give support to the top tier.

The top tier was placed on a cake card and then placed on top of the bottom tier. The next thing to do was to place Bowser on the cake. I wanted him to look like he was standing on guard over the birthday presents.
I used little pieces of foam to support his limbs which were removed just before the cake was presented. The birthday boy was thrilled with his cake, although once the top tier was removed poor old Bowser fell over and was not quite so scary looking!

This cake was designed by Amanda from a simple picture taken from the internet for my son, Teddy’s 5th Birthday party. The children at the party were really impressed and it made the party so much more special for Ted to have such a fuss made over his custom made cake. It was really delicious too!!

Thanks Cara, it is always really good fun to make kids birthday cakes.
I was really pleased with how Bowser came out especially as I did not know who he was before making the cake.
Very handy to have a 5 year old pointing out every short coming!

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I have a customer that requested the top “present” tier and a handmade Bowser like yours for her son’s birthday. Great job on the cake btw. I just wanted to give you credit since it’s your design. You can check my website for the final product if you’d like. Thanks for the inspiration for my customer and me! (the cake isn’t due until Feb. 6.

Hi diane
Just had a look at your site - very nice cakes! Will definitely check your Bowser Cake. He was good fun to make and it helped that my little boy was on hand for constant advice - whether asked for or not!
